Activities

Diving

Variety is the order of the day when scuba diving at Desroches where the diving is rich and diverse, featuring everything from vibrant corals, mini-walls and canyons to migrating Manta Rays. Green Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles are common both in water and on their habitual pilgrimages up the beach to lay their eggs. Dive depths vary, ranging from 8 - 40 metres. Sites with regular, gentle current flows support fan corals and colourful coral formations while more remote sites shelter the larger fish species, such as the Napoleon Wrasse, Giant Grouper, Reef Sharks and Ribbon-tailed stingrays. Most spectacular are the migrating plankton-eating Whale Sharks. Marine life around Desroches is prolific, with frequent sightings of many of the larger grouper species, particularly the spotted Potato Bass as well as barracuda. Desroches is a fully licences PADI diver operation that is fully kitted out. Just bring your dive card!

Fishing:

You do not have to venture far from Desroches to break fishing records, as it offers some the richest fishing grounds in the world. These waters boast yellowfin tuna, Striped Bonito, Bonefish, Giant Guitarfish, Bigeye Trevally, Bluefin Trevally, Giant Trevally, Moustache Grouper, Humphead Maori Wrasse and Dogtooth Tuna. Traditional bottom-fishing produces a dazzling array of Grouper, Job Fish, Snappers and Emperors, rewarding you with some of the finest tasting fish on offer anywhere. Desroches offers both deep-sea and salt-water fly-fishing. The resort is fully equipped with quality fishing boats that are equipped to take you around the atoll or further afield to Poivre and St Josephs in the Amirantes. Casting your fly lines will afford you the chance of landing several energetic bonefish and even the occasional GT, the Giant Trevally. We practice strict catch-and-release fishing, except for limited quantities caught freshly for the resort's menus.

Snorkeling

Desroches has around six great snorkelling coral reefs that are scattered around the island. Take your bicycle and snorkelling gear and explore the island and its varied reefs. Right off the villas are the coral outcrops of the Madame Zabre snorkelling site. Guests staying in the villas can literally walk out from their bedroom, be on the beach and within moments be snorkelling amongst the reef’s wonderfully coloured fish. (These coral reefs are out of bounds to fishermen). Other snorkelling sites around the island include Passe Tambi, Passe Theresa, the Aquarium and Passe Hodoul. The resort is fully equipped with a full range good snorkelling gear which guests are free to use. If you are a keen snorkeller, we recommend that you pack your mask and we will supply the rest.

Cycling

Bicycling is the way guests get around Desroches. The island is flat and the tracks are in good condition, so the bicycling is easy and its healthy too.
Desroches supplies a range of bikes in different sizes. They are all single speed bikes with baskets up front for carrying your gear.

Spa

The Coconut Spa is run by experienced and fully trained Balinese masseuses who offer a range of soothing and energising spa treatments.

Island Resort Lodge

Desroches forms part of the Amirantes group of islands, 230km south-west of Mahé. With 14 km of immaculate white soft sandy beaches and crystal blue waters, the island is one of the most beautiful in all of the Indian Ocean. Located at only 4 degrees south of the equator, Desroches is blessed with one of the world's healthiest, malaria free climates and is far away from the cyclone belt. The balmy days and nights create the feeling of one long, endless year-round summer with temperatures seldom falling below 22 degrees or rising above 32 degrees centigrade. The entire atoll has only one resort which is located towards the west of the island with 28 four bedroomed villas (available from 1st November 2008) and 20 junior suites. Just step out of your bedroom and you are on the beach and into the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Accommodation

Desroches has 20 Junior Suites that are located along the west-facing beach and built around Desroches central area, dining room, swimming pool and spa.
Each of the junior suites on Desroches is built 25 meters back from the high water mark, with no other buildings between your bedroom and the beaches. The rooms are set amongst tropical gardens, palm trees and green lawns. Each air-conditioned bedroom offers privacy with its own veranda, lounge area, TV and mini-bar. The well designed bathrooms have double basins, a bath and an outdoor shower.

Opening from 1st November 2008, Desroches will have 28 four bedroomed villas that are built along the north-west facing beaches. Guests step out of their villas and are on the beach. These four bedroomed villas offer an exclusive and private experience for families and groups of friends who are looking for their own private domain. There are a range of villa dimensions to choose from at varying prices per night. Villas sizes are either 440m², 600m², right up to the palatial Presidential 750m² villa that has over 100m of beach front.

Each fully equipped Villa has its own private swimming pool, central living and entertainment area as well as kitchenette. All bedrooms are air-conditioned and overlook the main entertainment deck towards the sea and are well appointed in a style that is modern and luxurious, yet blends in with that sensuous remote island atmosphere.

All prices quoted include three meals per day that are served in the hotel’s restaurants. Meals can be served in the villas at a surcharge.

The 440m² Beach Front Villas:
These have three master bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, with a bath as well and an indoor and an outdoor shower. The fourth bedroom is slightly smaller in size and has no bath.

The 600m² Deluxe Beach Front Villas:
There are only two 600m² villas on Desroches. They are built in the same island style as the 440m² villas. The only difference is that all four bedrooms are master bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms that contains a bath as well and an indoor and an outdoor shower.

The 750m² Presidential Beach Front Villas:
There is only one Presidential Villa. This has over 100m of beach frontage and the whole villa is spread out to take advantage of the views. All four bedrooms are air-conditioned master bedrooms with their own ensuite bathrooms.
